Wildlife suffers in Australian fires

It’s been estimated that 1.25 billion native animals have perished in the Australian bushfires, including koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas and more. As many as 8,400 koalas have already perished in the fires in NSW alone, and these numbers continue to rise. These fires are a threat to people, as well as our wildlife.

The catastrophic megafires sweeping our country are greatly worsening the species extinction crisis we’re already facing. Yet this is just the beginning. That’s why WWF-Australia has called for immediate global support to establish an AUD$30 million Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund.

The news stories show the effects on the larger animals, kangaroos, koalas and wombats, little mention is made of the birds, lizards and insects let alone the plant species and fish. All these will be significantly affected because of the size of the fires, leaving nowhere to hide.
