Japanese volcano threatening disastrous eruption next to nuclear plant

The Sakurajima volcano in Japan, responsible for one of the biggest eruptions in Japans history is set to blow again – this time Sendai Nuclear Power Plant is next door. When the volcano last had a major eruption, nearly 90,000 people were evacuated and seven villages destroyed.

Experts say the fiery peak on the island of Kyushu has nearly built up enough magma for another cataclysmic eruption.

After the 2011 tsunami, like all similar facilities in Japan, the plant was closed. However, being only 25 miles from the crater still could be a risk to the plant, depending on how large the eruption is.

Authorities are taking this seriously and planning for the worst case.
