Singapore launches Community Emergency Guidelines

A community emergency guide was launched in Jurong on Sunday (May 29) so that residents can have emergency contacts at their fingertips.

The guide is a pocket-sized card that lists emergency telephone numbers and also has information on what residents should do in the event a weapons attack or other emergency. It will also be rolled out to other constituencies in Singapore.

The emergency guide was launched during the revamped Emergency Preparedness Day held in Jurong West on Sunday. A drill at Jurong Spring showed a simulated bomb threat and what residents should do in such a situation, which is to run or hide for cover and call the police.

Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Saturday said a terrorist attack is a “clear and present threat”, and every Singaporean needs to be prepared.

“It’s no longer an idea of ‘the police will take care of it’, ‘SCDF will take care of it’ – it’s individual responsibility, it’s you, it’s I, it’s each one of us. The message is about every Singaporean taking responsibility. It’s not easy. It’s going to take time. But we have to do it,” he said.
