Twelve major fires still burning as number of buildings destroyed climbs

Victorian fire authorities continue to battle uncontrolled blazes across the state, as total structural losses climbs past 350.

One person was killed in the Longwood fire, near the central Victorian town of Seymour, police confirmed on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighting crews continue to combat the Mt Darling bushfire near Dargo that is not yet under control, burning through over 40,000 hectares of the Alpine National Park in Victoria’s east.

A Watch and Act warning is still in place for nearby communities, with residents warned to monitor conditions.

Forest Fire Management’s Peter Brick, acting incident controller, said that cooler temperatures were helping with the firefighting effort.

Lightning strikes last week ignited the fire with wind pushing the blaze down through the dense bushland of the Wonnangatta Valley and toward Dargo.

Heavy machinery, aircrafts and over 130 firefighters are online today in the difficult terrain of the National Park currently consolidating containment lines.
