It has been reported that the death toll following a building, roof collapse in Shanghai has climbed to ten. The roof of a building under renovation in central Shanghai collapsed on Thursday around midday, trapping more than 20 workers, according to China’s Ministry of Emergency Management.
More than 150 firefighters and 24 fire engines participated in the rescue operations. Medical personnel were making “all-out efforts” to treat the injured.
The rescue mission had ended by 1.45am on Friday, at which point rescuers had found 25 people, including the 10 dead.
Videos posted on Weibo showed a massive collapsed building and firefighters searching through the rubble. About half of the low-rise building collapsed, crushing construction workers under piles of toppled concrete pillars and shattered wooden beams.
The building was in the residential Changning district in central Shanghai.
China is no stranger to building collapses and deadly construction accidents, which are typically blamed on the country’s rapid growth leading to corner-cutting by builders and the widespread flouting of safety rules.
