The Sakurajima volcano Sakurajima spectacularly erupted last Friday (5th February, 2016), near Sendai the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, and the largest city in the Tōhoku region.
The Sakurajima volcano is also about 50 kilometres from a nuclear plant. The eruption has seen ash and rocks sent nearly two kilometres away.
Reports say that the volcano is in a relative isolated area of Japan’s main island, however it appears that the stones have caused many small fires.
There were no immediate report of damage and operations at the power station were not affected.
The Sendai nuclear power station, run by Kyushu Electric Power and located on the same island, resumed operations last year after being shut down, along with all of Japan’s nuclear plants, after a 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
